The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the era of ballot box snatching and unlawful alteration of election results is coming to an end as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Speaking during a public engagement, the INEC chairman said the electoral commission has continued to strengthen its processes through the deployment of technology, improved logistics, and enhanced collaboration with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of elections across the country.
According to Amupitan, recent electoral reforms and innovations have significantly reduced opportunities for electoral malpractice. He noted that the commission remains committed to delivering elections that are transparent, credible, and reflective of the will of the people.
The INEC chairman emphasized that measures have been put in place to deter ballot box snatching, result manipulation, voter intimidation, and other forms of electoral misconduct. He added that anyone found attempting to undermine the electoral process would face the full weight of the law.
Amupitan also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns and respect the outcome of elections. He stressed that the responsibility of ensuring credible polls extends beyond INEC and requires cooperation from security agencies, civil society organisations, political stakeholders, and voters.
Political analysts have welcomed the commission’s commitment to improving election integrity but noted that sustained implementation of electoral reforms will be essential to building public confidence ahead of the 2027 polls.
