Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has declared his support for Pelumi Olajengbesi, the Accord Party candidate for the Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency of Osun State ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election.
Igboho made his position known on Sunday when Olajengbesi visited him at his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. During the meeting, the activist described the candidate as “a breath of fresh air” and said the constituency required a change in representation.
Olajengbesi is seeking to represent Oriade/Obokun in the House of Representatives on the platform of Accord. He is expected to face the incumbent lawmaker, Wole Oke of the All Progressives Congress, in the 2027 election, according to the report.
Igboho’s endorsement was linked to the relationship between the two men, particularly the legal assistance Olajengbesi reportedly provided during one of the activist’s most difficult periods.
According to a statement issued by Olajengbesi’s media office and forwarded to PUNCH, Igboho recalled that the lawyer represented him following the raid on his Ibadan residence in July 2021 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Igboho subsequently fled to the Republic of Benin, where he was detained.
The activist also recalled Olajengbesi’s intervention when he wanted to organise his mother’s burial and was reportedly facing the possibility of arrest. Igboho said the lawyer approached relevant government officials on his behalf.
Igboho said the support Olajengbesi provided during those circumstances influenced his decision to back the lawyer’s political ambition.
“It’s important to have a change in representation in the constituency. Pelumi is a breath of fresh air,” Igboho said, according to the statement.
He added that he would support Olajengbesi’s campaign and urged him to ensure that he fulfilled his promises to residents if elected.
“I am supporting his ambition for Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency with everything that I have,” Igboho said, while reminding the candidate of the assistance he had received from him in the past.
The activist’s endorsement comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with candidates and political parties beginning to mobilise supporters and build campaign structures.
Olajengbesi, who previously served as campaign spokesperson for the re-election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, said the constituency needed younger and more vibrant representation.
The Accord candidate said he wanted to move away from what he described as the recycling of old ideas and pledged to pursue effective representation and development-oriented programmes if elected.
The endorsement, however, remains a political expression of support and does not by itself determine the outcome of the 2027 election. The eventual representative for the constituency will be determined through the electoral process.
For Olajengbesi, the development adds the backing of a prominent South-West activist to his campaign as he seeks to challenge the incumbent. The race is expected to attract further attention as political parties and candidates intensify their preparations for the election.
Igboho’s intervention also illustrates the role that influential individuals outside formal political structures can play in constituency-level campaigns. His support for Olajengbesi is based, according to his own account, partly on their previous relationship and the legal assistance the candidate provided during the activist’s legal and security challenges.
As the 2027 election approaches, candidates in Oriade/Obokun will have to present their programmes to voters, while the electorate will ultimately determine who represents the constituency in the House of Representatives.
