Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has passed away in Cairo, Egypt, where she had been receiving medical treatment.
Her death was announced early Friday by her grandson, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, via social media. In his statement, he described the late matriarch as a woman of “gentle soul” and called on the public to offer prayers for her repose as arrangements are made to return her body to Nigeria for Janaza (Islamic funeral) rites.
The development comes amid a challenging period for the family, as Nasir El-Rufai remains in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over allegations of money laundering. He has been detained since early March, with a bail hearing scheduled for March 31.
The situation has sparked discussions around Islamic funeral obligations, particularly whether the former governor will be granted the opportunity to attend his mother’s burial in accordance with religious traditions.
Condolences have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s political landscape, including from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as well as other prominent figures, reflecting the widespread sympathy for the bereaved family.
Hajiya Umma El-Rufai is remembered for her humility, strength, and devotion to family, leaving behind a legacy cherished by those who knew her.
