The African Policy and Research Consortium (APRC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate former President Goodluck Jonathan for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, describing him as one of Africa’s most qualified statesmen for the prestigious international office.
In a statement, the policy and research organization argued that Jonathan’s leadership experience, commitment to democratic governance and growing international profile make him a strong candidate to succeed the current UN Secretary-General when the position becomes vacant.
The APRC noted that Jonathan has earned widespread recognition for his role in promoting peace, democracy and electoral integrity across Africa through his work as an international election observer and mediator.
According to the group, the former Nigerian leader has consistently demonstrated a commitment to conflict resolution, good governance and regional stability since leaving office in 2015.
The consortium urged President Tinubu to take advantage of Nigeria’s diplomatic influence by formally presenting Jonathan’s name for consideration, arguing that such a nomination would enhance Nigeria’s standing on the global stage while showcasing African leadership in international affairs.
The organization maintained that Jonathan possesses the diplomatic experience, political maturity and international credibility required to lead the world’s foremost multilateral institution at a time of increasing global uncertainty.
It also highlighted Jonathan’s involvement in peace missions, election observation assignments and mediation efforts in several African countries as evidence of his ability to build consensus and engage constructively with diverse stakeholders.
The call comes as discussions gradually begin over potential candidates who could succeed the current UN Secretary-General at the end of the present term, with several regions expected to put forward distinguished nominees.
Political analysts note that while member states are free to nominate candidates, the selection of a UN Secretary-General involves a complex process requiring the recommendation of the United Nations Security Council and approval by the United Nations General Assembly.
They also point out that geopolitical considerations, regional balance and support from the Security Council’s five permanent members often play decisive roles in determining the eventual appointment.
Supporters of Jonathan’s potential candidacy argue that his peaceful transfer of power following Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election significantly strengthened his international reputation as a statesman committed to democratic principles.
Others believe Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous country and one of the continent’s leading diplomatic actors, has the credentials to present a candidate for one of the world’s highest international offices.
At the time of reporting, neither the Presidency nor former President Jonathan had publicly responded to the APRC’s appeal.
Observers say the proposal has nonetheless revived discussions about Nigeria’s role in global diplomacy and the possibility of a Nigerian occupying one of the most influential positions within the United Nations.
Should the Federal Government decide to support such a nomination, analysts believe it would represent one of Nigeria’s most significant diplomatic initiatives in recent years and could further elevate the country’s profile in international affairs.
