Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England 3-0 in a commanding Round of 16 encounter in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, on Thursday.
The Nigerian side produced a disciplined and clinical performance to secure their second victory of the tournament, with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu sending Moses Aduku’s team into the last eight.
Nigeria made an immediate statement in the knockout match, taking the lead after just eight minutes. Rafiu capitalised on the Falconets’ early attacking pressure to put the ball beyond England goalkeeper Katie Cox and give Nigeria a 1-0 advantage.
England attempted to respond and created opportunities as the first half progressed. However, the Falconets’ defence, supported by an outstanding display from goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma, kept the Young Lionesses from finding an equaliser.
Uzoma produced one of the key moments of the match when she saved Rachel Maltby’s penalty after England were awarded a spot kick following a VAR review. The intervention preserved Nigeria’s advantage and ensured the Falconets went into the interval leading 1-0.
Nigeria returned from the break with renewed attacking intent and doubled their advantage only two minutes into the second half.
Akekoromowei found the net in the 47th minute to make it 2-0, putting England under increased pressure and giving Nigeria greater control of the contest.
England tried to reduce the deficit, but Nigeria remained organised and continued to threaten on the counter. The Falconets eventually extended their advantage in the 73rd minute when substitute Mary Mamudu completed the scoring.
Mamudu, who had entered the game in the second half, made an immediate impact by converting a chance created by her teammates to put Nigeria three goals ahead. The goal effectively ended England’s hopes of staging a comeback.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 victory for Nigeria and ended England’s campaign in Poland. The England Football Association confirmed that the Young Lionesses were eliminated at the Round of 16 stage following the defeat.
The result represents a significant turnaround for the Falconets, who struggled to score in their opening two group matches. Nigeria began the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China.
With qualification for the knockout stages at stake, the Falconets responded emphatically in their final Group F fixture, defeating New Caledonia 10-1. That result secured second place in the group with four points and set up the Round of 16 meeting with England.
Nigeria have now scored 13 goals in their last two matches of the tournament, having failed to score in their first two games.
The Falconets are two-time runners-up at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and are continuing their pursuit of a first title in the competition. Their latest victory keeps that ambition alive as they advance into the decisive stages of the tournament.
Nigeria’s next opponent will be either hosts Poland or Colombia, depending on the outcome of their Round of 16 meeting. The quarter-final is scheduled for September 20 at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź in Łódź, with kick-off set for 6:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
The victory over England also extends Nigeria’s impressive scoring run while highlighting the team’s ability to respond after a difficult start to the tournament. Against England, three different players found the net, while Uzoma and the Nigerian defence secured another clean sheet.
For coach Moses Aduku and his players, attention now turns to the quarter-finals, where Nigeria will face another major test in their pursuit of a place in the semi-finals.
With the knockout stage now underway, the Falconets will look to build on their emphatic victory over England as they continue their campaign for Nigeria’s first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
