The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified its demand for the resignation of Prof. Joash Amupitan, vowing to escalate civil disobedience actions over allegations questioning his neutrality as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The opposition party’s stance follows growing controversy surrounding alleged past social media posts attributed to Amupitan, which critics claim reveal partisan leanings toward the ruling government led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The claims, which have circulated widely online, have sparked national debate and raised concerns about public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

In a strongly worded statement, the ADC described the situation as a serious threat to democratic integrity, insisting that the electoral umpire must not only be impartial but also be perceived as such by the public. The party further alleged attempts to manipulate or erase digital records linked to the controversy, describing it as an attack on transparency and accountability.

Reaffirming its position, the ADC warned that it would mobilize sustained civil disobedience and escalate petitions to both local and international institutions if Amupitan fails to step down. The party maintained that anything short of his resignation would undermine confidence in future elections.

Meanwhile, INEC has dismissed the allegations, cautioning against misinformation and reiterating its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. The commission urged Nigerians to rely only on verified communication channels.
As reactions continue to pour in, the controversy has further deepened political tensions, with observers warning that the outcome could significantly impact public confidence in the nation’s democratic process ahead of future elections.
