EU OPENS DOORS: High-Paying Diplomatic Traineeship for Nigerian Graduates Announced

In a significant boost for young professionals seeking international exposure, the European Union has unveiled a new traineeship programme targeted at Nigerian graduates, offering a six-month placement within its delegation in Abuja.

The initiative, scheduled to commence tentatively in July 2026, will be hosted under the Political, Press and Information (PPI) Section of the EU Delegation to Nigeria. Applications for the highly competitive programme are expected to close on April 19, 2026.

In its official call for applications, the EU invited ambitious young Nigerians with an interest in international relations and diplomacy to apply. The programme is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience in the workings of a diplomatic mission, while deepening their understanding of how the EU advances its interests and values within Nigeria and the wider West African region.

According to the announcement, successful candidates will gain direct exposure to policy engagement and diplomatic processes. The PPI Section, which plays a central role in maintaining political relations between the EU, Nigeria, and the Economic Community of West African States, will involve trainees in drafting analytical reports on political developments, human rights issues, economic trends, and foreign policy dynamics.

Participants are also expected to support high-level meetings, contribute to communication strategies, and assist in organizing public diplomacy events. In addition, they will be involved in preparations for official visits by EU institutions and help coordinate activities among EU member states operating in Nigeria.

Eligibility for the programme is strictly limited to Nigerian citizens currently residing in Abuja, a condition attributed to prevailing health and security considerations. Applicants must be recent graduates with at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and should have less than one year of professional experience after graduation. Furthermore, candidates must not have previously worked for more than six weeks within any EU institution.

Interested applicants are required to submit a detailed Europass curriculum vitae, a compelling cover letter outlining their motivation, and a completed application form via email. The EU has emphasized that only complete and eligible applications will be considered, with shortlisted candidates invited for interviews.

While selected trainees will receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses, the EU clarified that participants will bear costs related to travel, accommodation, visas, and insurance.

As Nigeria continues to position itself within the global diplomatic landscape, this opportunity represents more than just a traineeship—it is a gateway for young Nigerians to engage with international policy, diplomacy, and global governance at the highest level.
