Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a suspected member of the Eiye Confraternity, identified as Oghenebuba Mamatime, in connection with the alleged shooting of a former cult member in the state.
According to the police, the suspect was apprehended during an ongoing investigation into the attack, which authorities believe may be linked to cult-related activities.
Police said preliminary findings indicate that the victim, a former member of a cult group, was shot under circumstances that are still being investigated. The victim reportedly received medical attention following the incident.
The Delta State Police Command stated that detectives are working to determine the motive behind the attack and whether other individuals were involved in planning or carrying out the alleged crime.
Authorities also disclosed that efforts are underway to identify and arrest any additional suspects connected to the incident, while forensic and intelligence investigations continue.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face prosecution if sufficient evidence is established. Under Nigerian law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The arrest forms part of the Delta State Police Command’s broader campaign against cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
Cult-related violence has remained a security concern in parts of Delta State and other regions of Nigeria, often resulting in clashes, targeted attacks and threats to public safety.
Security experts have repeatedly called for stronger intelligence gathering, community policing, youth empowerment initiatives and effective prosecution of offenders as part of a comprehensive strategy to combat cultism.
Community leaders have also urged young people to avoid involvement in cult groups, emphasizing the importance of education, employment opportunities and positive social engagement in preventing youth participation in criminal activities.
The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing investigations into cult-related crimes.
Authorities further encouraged residents to report suspicious activities promptly, assuring the public that information provided through official security channels would be treated confidentially.
Police said investigations into the alleged shooting are continuing, with additional updates expected as more facts emerge and legal proceedings progress.
