A protocol officer attached to the Delta State Governor’s Office, Tempo Mudi, was allegedly assaulted during a leadership meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State after reportedly praising the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The incident occurred on July 28 at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, where party leaders and members had gathered for the meeting.
According to accounts of the incident, Mudi’s remarks in support of the Tinubu administration triggered a confrontation with some youths present at the venue. The situation reportedly escalated into violence, with the aide allegedly attacked using bottles and physically beaten.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show Mudi receiving medical treatment shortly after the incident. The footage shows visible injuries, including bloodstains on his face and clothing, suggesting he sustained head wounds during the assault.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political figures and civil society groups, with many describing it as an unacceptable act of political intolerance.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the assault, stating that violence has no place in a democratic society and that every citizen has the right to express political opinions without fear of intimidation or attack.
Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung also criticized the incident, describing it as inconsistent with democratic values and urging political actors to embrace dialogue rather than violence.
Political observers say the attack highlights growing tensions within Nigeria’s political environment as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.
