COPDEM Condemns INEC Delisting of ADC Leadership, Demands Reinstatement

The Coalition for Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its decision to remove the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from its official portal, describing the move as a threat to democratic principles.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, COPDEM said the delisting of the ADC National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President David Mark represents “a direct assault on democratic inclusion” and raises concerns about the neutrality of the electoral body.

The group argued that INEC’s action contradicts the directive of the Court of Appeal to maintain the status quo in the ongoing leadership dispute within the party. According to COPDEM, removing the party’s recognized leadership has created uncertainty and could destabilize the ADC’s internal structure.

COPDEM also expressed concern that the development could be politically motivated, alleging that it may be aimed at weakening opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. The coalition urged INEC to provide a clear explanation for its actions if it intends to maintain public trust.

The group outlined several demands, including the immediate reinstatement of the David Mark-led NWC on INEC’s portal, recognition of the leadership affirmed at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting in July 2025, and an end to what it described as interference in the party’s affairs.

COPDEM further warned that failure to reverse the decision could lead to peaceful civic actions across the country in defense of democratic integrity.

The statement was signed by COPDEM spokesman, Professor Danjuma Saleh, who reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the rule of law and called on INEC to uphold its constitutional responsibility as an impartial electoral body.
