Proceedings in the Senate took a dramatic turn during the confirmation hearing of ambassadorial nominee, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole exchanged sharp remarks over whether the nominee should be cleared while legal issues dating back to his tenure in academia remain unresolved.
The debate centred on calls by Senator Oshiomhole for the Senate to postpone Fasina’s confirmation until pending court proceedings relating to allegations of sexual harassment from his days as a university administrator are concluded. Oshiomhole argued that delaying the confirmation would protect the integrity of the Senate’s screening process and avoid any perception that lawmakers were disregarding unresolved legal matters.
According to the former Edo State governor, public office holders, particularly those representing Nigeria abroad, should be free from controversies capable of undermining public confidence or the country’s international image. He urged his colleagues to exercise caution and allow the judicial process to run its course before taking a final decision.
As the debate progressed, Senate President Akpabio interrupted with a light-hearted but pointed remark directed at Oshiomhole, referencing a video that circulated on social media earlier in the year showing a man resembling the senator massaging the foot of a South African social media influencer aboard a private jet.
The comment immediately drew laughter from some lawmakers but also intensified the exchange on the Senate floor. Oshiomhole dismissed the video, insisting that it had been generated using artificial intelligence and should not be relied upon as authentic evidence.
However, the incident has remained a subject of public debate, with independent fact-checks previously reporting that they found no clear evidence suggesting the video had been digitally manipulated or generated using artificial intelligence. The authenticity of the footage has continued to generate differing opinions among members of the public.
Despite the disagreement and objections raised during the session, the Senate proceeded with the screening exercise and eventually voted to confirm Professor Fasina as an ambassadorial nominee.
The confirmation has sparked mixed reactions across political and social media platforms. While some Nigerians viewed the exchange between Akpabio and Oshiomhole as a moment of political banter that reflected the often lively nature of legislative debates, others criticised the Senate for allowing personal exchanges to overshadow serious discussions relating to allegations against a nominee for public office.

Others, however, maintained that every individual is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless found guilty by a competent court of law.
