Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to offer him land as part of the rewards for Nigeria’s football achievements, saying he is not familiar with the location of the property.
The former Chelsea midfielder made the comment while discussing the recognition given to members of the Super Eagles following their success at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Obi Mikel acknowledged the gesture but admitted that he does not know where the land allocated to him is situated.
The Nigerian football legend was among several players and officials who received recognition from the government after the national team’s historic performances at major international competitions. The reward package was introduced as a way of appreciating the contributions of players who brought honour to the country.
Obi Mikel, who captained Nigeria during his international career, expressed gratitude for the honour but explained that he had not had the opportunity to visit or identify the land. He added that he appreciates the government’s effort to reward athletes for their dedication and sacrifices.
The former midfielder remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated footballers, having enjoyed a successful club career with Chelsea, where he won several major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and English Premier League titles. He also played a key role for the Super Eagles, featuring in multiple AFCON tournaments and FIFA World Cup campaigns.
The issue of rewards for Nigerian athletes has often generated discussions, with some players calling for better implementation and transparency in recognising sporting achievements. Many supporters believe that honouring former players can encourage younger generations to pursue careers in sports.
Obi Mikel’s comments have attracted reactions from football fans, with many praising his humility and continued interest in Nigerian football development.
