No apologies please; the value that defines Peter Obi – Bianca

In an era where public office is too often associated with excess, luxury and the pursuit of personal comfort, stories that reveal a different kind of leadership deserve to be told. One such story was shared by former Nigerian Ambassador and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, offering a glimpse into the personal values that have long shaped Peter Obi.

According to Bianca, sometime in 2009, while serving as Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi visited Dallas, Texas, to deliver a goodwill message from then-President Goodluck Jonathan to the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. During the trip, Obi was scheduled to attend a prestigious black-tie event at the Dallas Marriott attended by influential personalities, including elected officials, business leaders and dignitaries.

What immediately caught the attention of his hosts was his unusually light travel arrangement. Arriving with only a small carry-on bag containing files, documents, toiletries and an extra shirt, Obi appeared completely unprepared for a formal evening event. When asked what he intended to wear, he reportedly realized that he had overlooked the dress code requirements.

Determined to ensure the governor was appropriately dressed, Bianca took him to a luxury men’s store at Nieman Marcus. There, a Tom Ford suit valued at nearly $4,000 was identified as a perfect fit. However, Obi’s reaction was characteristically different.

Rather than focusing on style or prestige, he reportedly calculated the equivalent value in Nigerian currency and asked a simple question: “Do you know how many students this amount of money can train in Nigeria?”

Despite repeated persuasion that his position and the calibre of guests warranted such an expense, Obi declined to purchase the designer outfit. Instead, he opted for a modest suit from Steinmart costing approximately $220, which he happily wore to the event.

Yet the most remarkable part of the story came later.

As he prepared to return to Nigeria, Obi reportedly handed Bianca an envelope containing $3,800—the difference between the luxury suit he refused to buy and the affordable one he eventually purchased.

His reasoning was straightforward.

“If the label on the suit was ‘Peter Obi,’ I am wondering if anybody in America will pay that amount for it,” he reportedly remarked, before asking that the money be directed towards helping people in genuine need through Bianca’s charity foundation.

The funds were subsequently used to support struggling families and individuals, including a yam seller whose business was destroyed by fire, a sick father struggling to pay his children’s school fees, and a family facing eviction due to financial hardship.

For Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, the episode was not about money but about consistency of character. It was a demonstration of a man whose personal philosophy places value above vanity and service above status.

Whether one agrees with Peter Obi politically or not, the story highlights a principle that many believe is increasingly rare in public life: the willingness to live by one’s convictions even when no cameras are watching.

As Bianca concluded, societies progress not by celebrating the size of a person’s wealth, but by recognizing the values that guide how that wealth is used. If prudence, compassion and accountability are what some choose to describe as “stinginess,” then perhaps those virtues deserve a second look.
