ADC Supporter’s Comment on Obi’s Influence Sparks Debate

A recent remark by an African Democratic Congress (ADC) supporter suggesting that the party needed former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to secure electoral victory has triggered fresh debate over political strategy, party strength, and the evolving dynamics ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The controversy followed the circulation of a video clip from a discussion analysing an interview granted by Obi to journalist Rufai Oseni. In the clip, Matthew S., identified as an ADC affiliate, reportedly stated that the opposition party’s primary objective was to have Obi on its platform because of his electoral appeal and ability to attract widespread support.

The statement has generated varied reactions among political observers and supporters of different camps.

Supporters of Obi interpreted the comment as validation of his decision to leave the ADC in May 2026 and align with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where he later emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

They argue that his departure exposed internal disagreements within the ADC and demonstrated the extent of his political influence among opposition voters, particularly young Nigerians and members of the Obidient movement.

Obi had earlier joined the ADC in December 2025 alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as part of wider opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 polls.

However, critics of the reaction to Matthew’s remarks contend that the controversy has been exaggerated, noting that political parties naturally seek influential candidates with strong public support and electoral value.

According to them, the pursuit of candidates capable of winning elections is a normal feature of democratic politics and should not necessarily be interpreted as a sign of weakness or lack of ideology.

The development comes at a time when the ADC is navigating internal disagreements and competing interests as it seeks to reposition itself without Obi’s participation in its presidential calculations.

Political analysts say the episode reflects the increasing importance of candidate popularity, grassroots mobilisation, and strategic alliances in Nigeria’s highly competitive electoral environment.

They also note that the opposition landscape remains fluid, with parties continuously assessing their strengths and building coalitions capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

As the election approaches, discussions over the influence of key political figures, party structures, and coalition strategies are expected to intensify.

For many observers, the debate surrounding Matthew’s comments is another indication that Peter Obi’s political relevance remains a significant factor in Nigeria’s opposition politics, even as rival parties continue their efforts to broaden their appeal and present credible alternatives to voters.
