Popular political supporter and social media personality known as Mama Pee has urged the newly registered National Democratic Coalition (NDC) to field credible candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that Nigerians are no longer willing to support politicians blindly.
In a nearly three-minute video clip shared online on Wednesday, Mama Pee, widely recognised for her vocal support of Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, advised the opposition party to prioritise competence, integrity, and loyalty when selecting candidates for future contests.
Her comments have since generated intense reactions among supporters of the opposition movement, particularly members of the “Obidient” movement who backed Obi during the last presidential election.
Mama Pee Reflects on 2023 Election Experience
In the video, Mama Pee referenced disappointments experienced by many supporters following the 2023 elections, especially regarding some candidates who contested under the Labour Party platform.
According to her, many Nigerians invested hope and energy into the movement that emerged around Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, only to become frustrated by the actions of certain down-ballot candidates after the election.
She suggested that some politicians who benefited from the widespread support generated by Obi either underperformed in office or later defected from the party after securing electoral victories.
The 2023 presidential election saw Obi secure more than six million votes nationwide, with particularly strong performances among young voters and urban populations seeking political reforms and alternative leadership.
The campaign also produced one of Nigeria’s most active grassroots political movements in recent history, driven largely by volunteers and social media mobilisation.
However, internal divisions and post-election defections within the Labour Party later sparked criticism from supporters who felt the movement’s momentum had been weakened by opportunistic politicians.
Mama Pee argued in her message that the experiences of 2023 had made many Nigerians more politically conscious and less emotionally attached to party labels alone.
“Nigerians’ eyes have cleared,” she stated in the viral clip, suggesting that voters are now paying closer attention to the credibility and consistency of candidates seeking public office.
Push for Credible Opposition Candidates
The remarks come amid growing political discussions surrounding the newly registered NDC, which was officially approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in February 2026.
Political observers have increasingly linked the party to wider opposition coalition conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly among groups seeking to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mama Pee specifically urged the NDC leadership to focus on candidates with proven public trust and credibility, mentioning figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as examples of politicians many Nigerians still believe in.
Her comments quickly gained traction online, with several Obidient supporters reposting the video and tagging opposition leaders while demanding transparency in future candidate selection processes.
Supporters argued that opposition parties would struggle to gain public confidence unless they avoid repeating mistakes associated with weak party structures, internal conflicts, and candidate defections.
Some activists also stressed the need for ideological consistency and stronger accountability mechanisms within opposition platforms.
Critics Say Debate Is Premature
Despite the support the video received from opposition sympathisers, critics described the discussion as premature given that formal party primaries and coalition arrangements for 2027 have not yet begun officially.
Some commentators argued that political conversations around presidential candidates are already dominating public discourse too early, potentially distracting attention from governance and policy issues affecting Nigerians today.
Others cautioned against creating personality-driven political movements that rely heavily on individual popularity rather than institutional strength.
Political analysts say the debate reflects growing tensions and strategic calculations within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as groups attempt to build alliances capable of challenging the APC in the next election cycle.
Opposition Realignment Ahead of 2027
The conversation surrounding Mama Pee’s comments comes at a time when opposition politics in Nigeria appears to be entering a new phase of realignment and coalition-building.
Since the 2023 elections, several politicians and political blocs have explored potential partnerships aimed at consolidating opposition strength ahead of future elections.
Peter Obi remains one of the most influential opposition figures in the country, particularly among younger Nigerians and urban voters who continue to support his reform-focused political messaging.
Kwankwaso, meanwhile, retains significant political influence in northern Nigeria through his loyal support base and established political structure.
Analysts believe any serious opposition coalition ahead of 2027 would likely require cooperation among major opposition figures and regional political interests.
However, concerns over leadership ambitions, ideological differences, and internal trust continue to present major challenges for coalition efforts.
Growing Political Awareness Among Voters
Mama Pee’s viral message has also reignited conversations about changing voter attitudes in Nigeria.
Many Nigerians, particularly younger voters, have become increasingly active in political discussions online and more critical of politicians perceived as inconsistent or opportunistic.
Observers say this growing political awareness may influence how parties select candidates and communicate with voters ahead of future elections.
For now, the debate triggered by Mama Pee’s comments highlights the continuing influence of grassroots political voices in shaping Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape.
As political alignments continue to shift ahead of 2027, calls for credible leadership, stronger party structures, and accountable candidates are expected to remain central themes in national political discussions.
