“I’m Leaving Labour Party for PRP” — Datti Baba-Ahmed Backs Southern Presidency, Defends Peter Obi

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has revealed that he is leaving the Labour Party and plans to join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing the persistent troubles within the opposition and his commitment to supporting a southern presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Datti said he does not blame Peter Obi for leaving the Labour Party, noting that the ongoing crisis within the opposition has made political stability difficult.
According to him, his decision to move to PRP is driven by principle rather than personal ambition.
“I’m leaving Labour Party tonight and joining PRP tomorrow,” he declared.
Datti explained that his mission is to work toward the emergence of a credible southern candidate, stressing that national balance, justice, and political stability require deliberate support for power rotation.
He also made it clear that his political decisions are not motivated by personal hunger for office.
“God has blessed me already. I must not be President or Vice President to be okay,” he said, emphasizing that service to the country goes beyond occupying the highest offices.
His remarks are expected to further intensify conversations around opposition realignments, coalition talks, and the growing search for a formidable political alternative to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
The statement also adds fresh momentum to debates surrounding the future of Labour Party, the opposition coalition, and the political calculations surrounding Peter Obi’s next move.
Observers believe Datti’s open support for a southern candidate may significantly influence ongoing coalition negotiations among major opposition blocs seeking a united front ahead of the next presidential election.
