A viral video circulating online has drawn widespread reactions after showing a man accused of theft at a construction site allegedly emptying large quantities of paint in order to sell the containers.
The footage, which first gained attention in August 2023 and has resurfaced online, shows the suspect with his hands tied behind his back, surrounded by spilled paint. According to accounts accompanying the video, the man broke into a construction site and emptied multiple 20-litre emulsion paint buckets—each reportedly valued at about ₦17,000.
He allegedly sold the empty buckets for approximately ₦1,000 each, earning a total of around ₦60,000 from the act.
The incident has triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with many expressing disbelief at the decision, describing it as economically irrational given the value of the paint that was discarded. Others used the incident to highlight the broader issue of theft at construction sites and the rising cost of building materials in Nigeria.
Observers say the case reflects the desperation that can drive petty crimes, while also underscoring how such actions often result in significant losses rather than gains.
Authorities have not released any official statement regarding the incident or the identity of the suspect.
