A confrontation between officers of the Nigeria Police Force and a motorist has sparked widespread public reaction after a video of the incident circulated online.
The footage shows officers stopping a black Lexus SUV and questioning discrepancies in the vehicle’s engine or chassis numbers. Despite the driver presenting an affidavit to explain the mismatch, the officers reportedly insisted on further action.
According to accounts in the video, a senior officer had advised the officers at the scene to verify the documents immediately and allow the driver to proceed if no wrongdoing was established. However, the directive was allegedly ignored, leading to a prolonged dispute.
The incident has reignited concerns over routine police checks, with observers noting that existing guidelines limit document verification for private vehicles to a driver’s license, vehicle license, and proof of insurance—except in cases involving suspected theft.
Following the video’s circulation, several Nigerians shared similar experiences of alleged harassment and demands for bribes during traffic stops, calling for reforms within the police force.
Some stakeholders have also advocated the adoption of digital verification tools such as the electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) to improve transparency and reduce the potential for extortion.
