Open Letter Sparks War of Words Over Corruption Allegations

A public dispute has erupted following an open letter by Kio Amachree accusing businessman Gilbert Chagoury of corruption-related offenses, drawing a sharp response from political figure Segun Showunmi.

In the letter addressed to Showunmi, Amachree criticized his defense of Chagoury and raised a series of allegations, including claims tied to a 2000 Swiss conviction related to laundering funds linked to former military ruler Sani Abacha. The letter also referenced past reports of visa restrictions and alleged links to international investigations, alongside accusations that companies associated with Chagoury benefited from large no-bid contracts under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Responding publicly, Showunmi dismissed the claims as false and misleading, warning that legal action could be pursued over what he described as unsubstantiated accusations. He also questioned Amachree’s credibility, referencing his residence abroad and personal background.

Amachree, however, doubled down on his assertions, challenging Showunmi to proceed with legal action and maintaining that his claims are grounded in verifiable facts.

The exchange has since gained traction on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where it has sparked intense debate among Nigerians over issues of corruption, accountability, and political loyalty.

While no formal legal proceedings have been announced, analysts say the dispute highlights ongoing tensions around governance, transparency, and public trust in Nigeria’s political and business landscape.
