A prominent voice in Nigeria’s opposition politics, Peter Obi, has called for renewed national focus and urgent action following what he described as a successful and defining convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement released shortly after the party’s convention, Obi commended the resilience of party members and the leadership that ensured the event held despite prevailing challenges. The convention, he noted, marks a critical point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, underscoring the determination of stakeholders committed to sustaining democratic ideals.
Obi paid glowing tribute to the leadership of the party, particularly the National Chairman, David Mark, whose “calm and steady guidance,” he said, has continued to provide direction at crucial moments. He also acknowledged the efforts of the convention organising committee led by Liyel Imoke, praising their diligence and sacrifice in ensuring the success of the gathering.
The former Anambra State governor extended appreciation to delegates, party faithful, volunteers, and supporters across the country and in the diaspora, noting that their commitment demonstrates that democracy remains alive when citizens refuse to abandon it.
According to Obi, the successful conduct of the convention is not merely a political milestone but a testament to the enduring strength of the Nigerian people. He emphasized that the resilience shown by Nigerians continues to outweigh forces that may seek to undermine democratic processes.
However, Obi cautioned against complacency, urging party members and leaders to transition swiftly from celebration to responsibility. He stressed that Nigeria is currently grappling with severe challenges, including economic hardship, widespread insecurity, rising unemployment, and a growing sense of uncertainty among citizens.
“These issues require urgent attention, clear thinking, and decisive action,” Obi stated, adding that the true value of the convention lies in its ability to inspire meaningful change rather than serve as a ceremonial achievement.
He further called for a renewed commitment to nation-building, urging political actors to focus on practical solutions, institutional strengthening, and restoring hope to millions of Nigerians. According to him, the path forward demands unity, sacrifice, and integrity, virtues he described as essential for national progress.
