U.S. Lawmaker Raises Concerns Over Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity, Threatens Sanctions

A U.S. congressional figure, Von Batten-Montague-York, has raised fresh concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, citing systemic weaknesses within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the statement, while INEC is widely regarded—by institutions such as the United States Department of State and the European Union—as possessing the technical capacity to conduct credible elections, it has repeatedly struggled to withstand deliberate interference from political actors. The lawmaker pointed to the 2023 Nigerian general election as a key example, arguing that similar troubling patterns may be resurfacing in current developments.
The statement further revealed that although the U.S. Congress is presently on Easter recess, efforts are ongoing to brief key stakeholders, including senior members of Congress and the U.S. National Security Council, on the situation in Nigeria. The goal, it said, is to ensure that the issue remains a priority within U.S. foreign policy discussions.
In a notable shift in tone, the lawmaker contrasted the approach of the previous administration under Joe Biden with that of President Donald Trump, suggesting that the current leadership would be less inclined to remain passive in the face of alleged electoral manipulation.
Most significantly, the statement warned that recommendations would be made for the imposition of Global Magnitsky sanctions against any Nigerian political figures or INEC officials found to be complicit in undermining the electoral process. Proposed penalties include the freezing of foreign assets, restrictions from the global financial system, and travel bans affecting both the individuals involved and their immediate families.
The development signals increasing international scrutiny of Nigeria’s democratic processes and raises the possibility of diplomatic and economic consequences should allegations of electoral interference persist.
