ADC Marks Nine Months Amid Controversy Over Leadership Recognition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reached a significant milestone nine months after its emergence as a coalition platform for opposition figures, amid growing political tension following a recent decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise its current leadership.

The coalition was formally unveiled on July 2, 2025, at the Yar’Adua Centre, where former Senate President David Mark announced that the opposition had adopted the ADC as its political vehicle. At the time, he described the journey ahead as “long, difficult and tedious,” signalling the challenges the coalition expected to face.

Nine months later, on April 2, 2026, opposition leaders reconvened at the same venue in what observers described as a defining moment for the party. The gathering followed INEC’s April 1 announcement declining recognition of the ADC’s leadership, a move that has generated debate across political circles.

Growth and Internal Development

Since its unveiling, the ADC coalition has expanded its presence across the country, building party structures and mobilising supporters. Party sources claim the coalition has reached millions of Nigerians within weeks through its outreach efforts.

The party also established internal frameworks, including a policy development team—referred to as the “50 Wise Men and Women”—tasked with articulating its governance agenda. Additionally, a Code of Ethics was introduced to guide conduct within the party and strengthen institutional discipline.

Recruitment efforts have also intensified, with prominent political figures and their supporters joining the coalition. This has contributed to perceptions of a strengthening opposition bloc ahead of future electoral contests.

Challenges and Security Concerns

Despite its growth, the ADC has faced a series of challenges. Reports from within the party indicate incidents involving attacks on offices and members, including cases of violence and intimidation. However, there has been no official confirmation of arrests linked to these incidents.

Party leaders have consistently urged members to remain calm and law-abiding, even as tensions persist within the political environment.

INEC Decision Sparks Reactions

The decision by INEC not to recognise the leadership of the ADC has been a major point of contention. While the electoral body has maintained its position, critics within the opposition have questioned the timing and rationale behind the move, particularly as party activities and internal processes were ongoing.

The development has drawn comparisons in some quarters to past periods of political uncertainty in Nigeria, including the era of former military ruler Sani Abacha, when state actions often carried far-reaching implications for political actors.

Renewed Opposition Momentum

At the April 2 gathering, ADC leaders addressed supporters and reiterated their commitment to democratic principles. In a widely circulated speech, party representatives questioned the state of political competition in the country and called for a level playing field.

Observers note that the event drew a larger crowd than previous meetings, suggesting increased public interest in the coalition’s activities. The turnout has been interpreted by supporters as a sign of growing momentum for the opposition.

Outlook

Political analysts say the coming months will be critical for the ADC as it navigates institutional challenges and seeks to consolidate its position as a viable opposition platform.

While the party’s leadership dispute with INEC remains unresolved, its ability to sustain mobilisation, maintain internal cohesion, and expand its support base will likely determine its future role in Nigeria’s political landscape.

As the situation develops, attention will remain on how both the electoral body and the opposition coalition manage the evolving dynamics ahead of future political contests.
