REPORT:
The (ADC) is under intensifying internal pressure as stakeholders push a series of urgent measures aimed at preventing a full-blown crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prominent among the demands is the immediate suspension of all congresses and the swift convening of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to address rising tensions across party structures. Party insiders warn that proceeding with congresses under the current volatile atmosphere could trigger violence, deepen factional divides, and lead to the emergence of parallel leadership structures.
In a significant development, stakeholders are urging the NEC to approve at least a one-year extension of the current tenure of both national and state leadership. According to proponents, this step is necessary to maintain the status quo, stabilise the party, and allow time for reconciliation, consultation, and consensus-building.
They argue that the pressure created by the timetable of the (INEC), combined with internal agitations, has made it difficult to conduct credible, inclusive, and peaceful congresses at this time.
Crucially, there is a strong and growing demand that the ADC zones its 2027 presidential ticket to the South to complete the zoning formula in the interest of equity, justice, and fairness. Advocates maintain that such a decision would not only reflect national balance but also serve as a unifying framework capable of reducing internal rivalry and strengthening party cohesion.
This position was strongly advanced by Mal Abubakar Idris Abubakar (GOBIR), the Kano State Chairman of Coalition for the Protection of Democracy during the COPDEM NEC meeting held in Abuja. He warned that failure to take proactive steps could push the party into avoidable crisis and weaken its political prospects ahead of 2027.
Political observers caution that failure to adopt these stabilisation measures could plunge the party into avoidable legal disputes, weaken its internal structures, and undermine its chances of presenting a formidable challenge in 2027.
As tensions continue to rise, attention is now firmly on the NEC—widely seen as the decisive authority capable of restoring order, preserving unity, and steering the party away from imminent crisis.
