Owerri Tragedy Sparks Political Blame as Group Denounces Event Mismanagement

A recent incident in Owerri has triggered sharp reactions from political and social groups, following a stampede at a “City Boys” gathering that reportedly descended into chaos.

The Village Boys Movement has publicly distanced itself from the incident, issuing a strong condemnation of the event’s organization and aftermath. In a statement released on March 14, 2026, the group’s leader, Maazị Tochukwu Ezeoke, described the situation as a “shameless failure” and rejected any attempts to link the movement to the disruption.

Ezeoke alleged that the organizers of the City Boys event failed to properly manage the crowd, resulting in disorder that could have been avoided with adequate planning and coordination. He further accused supporters of the event of attempting to deflect responsibility through what he termed a “smear campaign.”

The statement also broadened its criticism to the national level, linking the incident to wider concerns about governance under Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to Ezeoke, the tragedy reflects growing frustration among Nigerians amid economic hardship and social challenges.

Reaffirming its position, the Village Boys Movement emphasized its commitment to promoting discipline, unity, and grassroots empowerment. The group also announced ongoing plans for a large-scale rally in support of Peter Obi, whom it described as a symbol of integrity and reform.

Observers note that the Owerri incident highlights not only the risks associated with poorly managed public events but also the deepening political tensions and narratives shaping public discourse in Nigeria.

Authorities are yet to release a full report on the circumstances surrounding the stampede, while calls continue for accountability and improved safety measures at large gatherings.
