The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebolo has stirred controversy after warning that billboards belonging to political parties other than the (APC) would not be allowed in the state.
In a statement that has since generated reactions across political circles, the governor reportedly declared that the only billboards he wants to see across Edo State are those of the ruling APC.
“The only billboard I want to see in Edo State is APC. If I see any ADC billboard here, I will bring it down, and the person that put it there will be arrested,” Okpebholo was quoted as saying.
The remarks appeared to target the (ADC), which has been expanding its political activities in several parts of the country ahead of future electoral contests.
Political observers say the statement could raise questions about political tolerance and freedom of expression, particularly in a democratic system where multiple parties are legally recognized by the (INEC).
The development has sparked debate among political stakeholders and citizens, with critics arguing that public spaces in a democracy should remain open to all legally registered political parties.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Government had not issued further clarification regarding the governor’s remarks.
