Missiles Rain on Israel, Yet Few Die — Nigeria Loses 100 in a Day Without Being at War

The ongoing hostilities in the Middle East have seen intense exchanges of missiles and rockets between forces linked to Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah on one side, and Israel with support from the United States on the other.

Reports indicate that over the past several days, hundreds of rockets, ballistic missiles, and drones have been launched toward Israeli territory and U.S. positions in the region. Despite the scale of the attacks, casualties among Israeli and American personnel have remained relatively limited.

Military analysts attribute this to Israel’s advanced missile defence systems, including layered interception technologies designed to neutralize incoming projectiles before they reach populated areas. The country’s extensive civil defense infrastructure—such as early warning sirens and bomb shelters—has also played a crucial role in reducing casualties.

In stark contrast, critics say the situation in Nigeria highlights a troubling paradox. Although Nigeria is not officially engaged in an international war, the country continues to experience deadly attacks from armed groups including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

Security incidents in parts of northern Nigeria have at times resulted in large numbers of casualties within a single day, fueling concerns about the effectiveness of security coordination, intelligence systems, and community protection mechanisms.

Observers argue that the comparison underscores a deeper crisis: while countries facing external military threats invest heavily in technology, intelligence, and civil defense systems, Nigeria continues to struggle with internal security challenges that claim lives even in the absence of a declared war.

For many Nigerians, the painful question remains why a nation technically at peace continues to record levels of violence that resemble those of countries in active conflict.
