Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, , has called on Nigerians to rally behind him ahead of the 2027 general elections, unveiling what he described as “Operation Rescue Nigeria.”
Speaking on the future of Nigeria’s democracy, Obi stressed that the country “must get it right in 2027,” insisting that election results must be transmitted electronically and in real time. According to him, any official who fails to transmit results as required should be held accountable. “Democracy must work,” he declared, appealing to citizens across political divides to join hands with him in what he termed a national rescue mission.
Obi also addressed his departure from the , stating that he was informed that as long as he remained in the party, the (INEC) would not recognise its leadership and that the Federal Government was determined to keep him off the ballot. Despite this, he expressed firm resolve to contest the next presidential election. “I will contest the coming election even if it is held in their bedroom,” he said, adding that if authorities refuse to transmit election results, “we will transmit them for them.”
On the state of the nation’s finances, Obi criticised the current administration over rising public debt, alleging that it has accumulated more loans than previous governments combined. He warned that a significant portion of the debt burden would fall due between 2045 and 2050, long after those responsible for contracting the loans may have left public office.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of Anambra State, Obi highlighted what he described as his commitment to integrity and restraint in public office. He revealed that upon assuming office, he advised his wife to forgo the title and privileges of First Lady, maintaining that they were not elected together. He further stated that although he approved over 100 Certificates of Occupancy for government lands while in office, neither he nor his family acquired any. “If you find any, petition me to the appropriate authority,” he challenged.
Obi’s remarks signal an early mobilisation effort toward 2027, with a renewed push for electoral transparency, fiscal responsibility, and what he characterises as ethical leadership under the banner of “Operation Rescue Nigeria.”
