The Anambra State Police Command has taken custody of a 52-year-old suspect, Ndibe Jude Onyenwe, from the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army Cantonment, Onitsha, in connection with an alleged road ambush and murder in Urum community.
In a statement issued on February 19, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was formally handed over to the Command on February 5, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, grievous bodily harm, and murder.
According to the police, Onyenwe is alleged to have conspired with one Felix Godwin and other individuals currently at large to sponsor armed men who carried out a violent ambush along a road in Urum, targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
Preliminary interrogation reportedly revealed that Felix Godwin allegedly transferred ₦500,000 through an Access Bank account to hire four gunmen from Ayamelum Local Government Area. The suspect further claimed that an individual identified simply as Emeka, said to be from Urum community, led the attack. He also alleged that Felix provided him with ₦350,000 to purchase four packets of cartridges allegedly used during the operation.
Police said six persons sustained serious gunshot injuries during the ambush.
The Command confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and is undergoing further interrogation as investigations continue. Authorities have also intensified efforts to apprehend other suspects believed to be involved in the incident.
The Anambra State Police Command assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses, reiterating its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
