Abuja, February 12, 2026 — The Federal Government has reinforced security operations across Nigeria’s North Central region following recent attacks in Kwara State that reportedly left about 75 villagers dead.
The renewed security push, code-named Operation Savannah Shield, involves expanded deployment of the military, the Nigeria Police Force and national forest guard units to vulnerable communities. Authorities say the operation is backed by strengthened intelligence-gathering systems and rapid-response protocols.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the attacks, describing them as “beastly and heartless,” and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible. The President had earlier declared a state of emergency on national security as part of broader counter-terrorism measures.
Expanded Deployments
Security reinforcements are being concentrated in communities considered at heightened risk, particularly across North Central states including Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
Officials said additional visible patrols are being deployed around places of worship, with enhanced coordination between security agencies, local leaders and faith-based organisations. The move is intended to reassure residents and deter further attacks.
Police Redeployment
In a parallel measure, the Nigeria Police Force has carried out a nationwide redeployment of officers previously assigned to VIP escort duties. The reassigned personnel have been returned to core policing responsibilities, a step authorities say is aimed at strengthening community-level security presence.
Government sources indicate that the policy shift is part of a broader strategy to prioritise frontline security operations and improve response times in affected areas.
International Cooperation
President Tinubu reiterated that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts remain sovereignty-driven and Nigerian-led. However, he signalled openness to international cooperation, including intelligence and surveillance support from partners such as the United States, where consistent with Nigeria’s national interests.
Security analysts say sustained coordination among federal, state and local authorities will be critical to maintaining operational momentum and preventing further attacks.
The latest measures underscore the government’s renewed focus on stabilising the North Central region amid ongoing security challenges.
