Real Madrid are reportedly exploring a surprise move for Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, with the Spanish giants considering a potential free transfer for the veteran defender next summer.
According to reports, Real Madrid have identified Van Dijk as a possible target as they assess their defensive options ahead of the 2027/28 season. The 35-year-old’s current contract with Liverpool is due to expire at the end of the 2026/27 campaign, meaning he could leave Anfield without a transfer fee if no new agreement is reached.
The proposed move would also create another reunion between Van Dijk and former Liverpool teammates at the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid signed Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2025, while Ibrahima Konaté joined the Spanish club after leaving Liverpool when his contract expired in June 2026.
Van Dijk has not ruled out discussions over his Liverpool future, but he recently indicated that no negotiations over a new contract had taken place. Asked about his situation, the Netherlands international said: “I am just focusing on the present. There is nothing to report on that.”
The defender remains an important part of Liverpool’s team under new manager Andoni Iraola and has continued to feature regularly during the early stages of the 2026/27 season. His performances have kept attention on his future despite his age.
A potential move to Real Madrid would be significant given Van Dijk’s status at Liverpool and his extensive experience at the highest level of European football. It would also continue Madrid’s recent recruitment strategy of signing established players whose contracts are approaching expiry.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and has since won major honours, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Liverpool confirmed in April 2025 that he had signed a new contract, which was reported to run until 2027.
For now, the reported Real Madrid interest remains a transfer possibility rather than a completed deal, with Van Dijk’s Liverpool contract situation expected to attract further attention as the season progresses.
