The Federal Capital Territory Administration has approved the immediate completion of the long-abandoned Utako General Hospital and the renovation and upgrading of 14 existing general hospitals across Abuja.
The decisions were reached at the 19th meeting of the FCT Executive Council on Tuesday, September 29, chaired by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The council also approved the provision of new medical equipment and improvements to diagnostic and surgical facilities.
Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, said the hospital projects would involve a comprehensive overhaul of infrastructure, alongside the procurement of modern equipment, including X-ray machines and other diagnostic tools.
“Today at the Executive Council, there were a lot of deliberations, and there was a particular deliberation on the health system,” Fasawe said, explaining that the minister had ordered the immediate award of the renovation, rehabilitation and upgrading projects.
Regarding the Utako General Hospital, Fasawe said work would resume immediately to complete, equip and staff the facility. The objective, she said, is to improve access to quality, affordable and accessible healthcare for residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
The administration also said it had continued meeting its financial obligations to Health Maintenance Organisations through premium and capitation payments under the FCT health insurance scheme.
The health-sector approvals are significant because the rehabilitation of public hospitals could expand access to medical services and improve the condition of healthcare infrastructure across the capital. The revival of the Utako facility is particularly notable after years of inactivity at the project site.
The approvals formed part of a broader set of decisions taken at the council meeting covering health, education, justice, security, power, water supply and infrastructure. The FCT Administration also approved a new divisional police station at the Wasa Informal Sector and several infrastructure projects in satellite towns.
The latest health intervention comes as the FCT continues its wider infrastructure programme. Earlier in September, Wike said the territory had implemented more than 60 per cent of its 2026 capital budget despite delays in releasing funds.
