The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has accused Governor Peter Mbah’s administration of imposing what it described as a “ruthless” and “inhuman” tax regime on residents and businesses in the state.
The opposition party’s allegation has renewed debate over taxation, revenue generation and the impact of government policies on individuals, traders and businesses in Enugu.
The ADC criticised the state government’s approach to tax collection, arguing that aggressive revenue mobilisation could place additional pressure on residents already facing economic challenges. The party’s comments come amid broader discussions about the role of taxation in funding public infrastructure and essential services.
The controversy is significant because Enugu, like other Nigerian states, is seeking to improve internally generated revenue as federal allocations and economic pressures continue to influence government finances. While increased revenue can provide states with more resources for development, tax policies can also affect business costs, consumer prices and household incomes when residents perceive the burden as excessive.
The criticism also comes as Governor Mbah’s administration continues to promote its development agenda, including investments in infrastructure and efforts to expand the state’s economic base. The governor has previously defended reforms aimed at improving government revenue and strengthening public services.
The ADC’s allegation, however, represents the opposition party’s position and does not by itself establish that the tax system is unlawful or abusive. The state government’s response to the latest accusation will be important in clarifying the objectives, structure and enforcement of its tax policies.
Taxation has remained a contentious issue in Enugu, particularly as authorities seek to broaden the revenue base.
