Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has responded to criticism from his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, insisting that his record as governor of Anambra State demonstrates his capacity to improve Nigeria.
Datti recently argued that none of the major politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, including Obi, could transform the country if elected. He advised Tinubu to leave office at the end of his tenure but questioned the ability of his leading opponents to improve Nigeria.
Reacting during an interview previewed by Arise Television, Obi pointed to his experience in Anambra as evidence that he could deliver similar improvements at the national level.
“I passed through Anambra State, and I improved the state in critical areas of development. And I can do the same thing in Nigeria,” Obi said.
The former governor said his proposed administration would focus on reducing the cost of governance, tackling corruption and waste, strengthening security and restoring what he described as civility and order in government.
He also identified national unity, security, healthcare, education and poverty reduction as key priorities. Obi said his administration would ensure that government resources were directed towards areas that have the greatest impact on citizens.
“I fight corruption and issues of waste. I’ve dealt with issues of law and order,” he said, while also promising to address election-related malpractice and improve governance.
The exchange is significant because both Obi and Datti were central figures in the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign before their political paths diverged. Their latest comments add another dimension to the debate over who can provide effective leadership in 2027.
Obi served as Anambra governor from 2006 to 2013 and contested the 2023 presidential election. He is now seeking the presidency under the NDC as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 election.
