Former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged Nigerians to reject President Bola Tinubu at the 2027 presidential election, arguing that another term could worsen the economic difficulties confronting citizens.
Amaechi made the remark while speaking at a political engagement, where he criticised the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies and urged voters to make their decisions based on their living conditions.
The former governor delivered a blunt warning to Nigerians, saying those who vote to retain the president should be prepared for continued economic hardship.
“Vote Tinubu and die of poverty,” Amaechi was quoted as saying.
He also questioned whether Nigerians were better off under the current administration, pointing to the rising cost of living and the economic pressure experienced by households.
Amaechi’s comments come as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general election. The ADC has emerged as one of the platforms seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi among prominent opposition figures associated with the broader political realignment.
The former minister of transportation has positioned himself as a strong critic of the Federal Government, particularly over its handling of the economy and the consequences of reforms introduced since Tinubu assumed office.
The statement is likely to generate further political debate as Nigerians assess the government’s record against the opposition’s promises ahead of the election.
Supporters of Tinubu have maintained that the administration’s reforms are intended to stabilise the economy and create conditions for long-term growth, while critics argue that citizens are bearing the immediate burden of those policies.
Amaechi’s warning therefore forms part of the increasingly heated political contest over the direction Nigeria should take after 2027.
Tinubu was elected president in 2023 and is seeking another term in office. Amaechi, who served as Rivers governor from 2007 to 2015, was also a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari before joining the ADC political platform.
With the 2027 election approaching, economic performance, the cost of living and the impact of government reforms are expected to remain central issues in campaigns and voter discussions.
