The growing security challenges in parts of Niger State have raised concerns over the movement of residents across Nigeria’s border with the Republic of Benin in search of safety.
Prince Murtala Haliru Dantoro, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and House of Representatives candidate for Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency, said insecurity was increasingly affecting the lives and livelihoods of people in Borgu Emirate.
Dantoro made the remarks during a press conference in Minna, where he appealed to the Federal Government to establish a permanent and sustained security presence in the area. He cited killings, kidnappings, displacement and restrictions on farming and movement among the challenges confronting residents.
According to the politician, the security situation has become serious enough to push some Nigerians across the border into Benin Republic.
“We are losing citizens to Benin Republic,” Dantoro said, warning that the development should be treated as more than a local security issue.
He said farmers were increasingly unable to access their farmlands safely, while women and children were facing growing risks while travelling between communities.
Dantoro also drew attention to the destruction of a major bridge linking Borgu with the Republic of Benin, Kebbi and Sokoto, describing the infrastructure as an important economic connection for communities in the region.
The ADC chieftain urged the Federal and Niger State governments to adopt preventive security measures rather than waiting for attacks to occur before responding.
He further appealed to humanitarian organisations to assist people displaced from Babanna and other affected communities, particularly women and children who require shelter and basic support.
The concerns are significant because prolonged insecurity can affect farming, trade, transportation and other economic activities, while also encouraging displacement from affected communities.
Dantoro maintained that residents of Borgu were not seeking special treatment but wanted government to provide the protection expected of every Nigerian community.
His comments come as security remains a major national issue ahead of the 2027 elections. Political parties and candidates are expected to face increasing pressure to address insecurity and its impact on communities.
For residents of border areas such as Borgu, the immediate concern remains restoring enough security to allow people to live, farm, trade and travel without fear.
