Prospective international students planning to study in the United Kingdom have been advised to carefully complete 11 key steps when applying for a UK Student visa, with UK Visas and Immigration warning applicants to ensure their documents and personal information are accurate before submitting their applications.
The guidance is particularly relevant to Nigerians and other international students preparing to begin studies in the UK, where an incomplete application or incorrect documentation can lead to delays or other complications.
According to UKVI, applicants should begin by confirming that the Student visa is the appropriate immigration route for their intended course. The official UK government guidance states that applicants must generally be aged 16 or over and have been offered a place on an eligible course by a licensed student sponsor.
1. Secure an unconditional admission
Applicants must obtain an unconditional offer from a UK institution licensed to sponsor international students.
After accepting the offer, the institution issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference. The CAS is essential because applicants must include its reference number in their visa application.
2. Prepare supporting documents
Students should prepare all documents required for their individual circumstances. These may include evidence of English-language ability, financial documents and, where applicable, a tuberculosis test certificate.
Students pursuing certain master’s-level or higher courses may also require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.
3. Apply at the correct time
Applicants outside the UK can submit their applications up to six months before their course begins.
Those applying from inside the UK can generally apply up to three months before their course starts and must submit the application before their existing immigration permission expires.
UKVI also advised applicants not to book travel before receiving a decision.
4. Complete the online application
Applicants must use the official UK government Student visa application process and provide information including their name as it appears on their passport, travel details and relevant family information.
UKVI warned applicants to read questions carefully and ensure that all information entered is correct.
5. Demonstrate sufficient funds
Applicants may be required to demonstrate that they have enough money to pay for their studies and support themselves while in the UK.
UKVI specifically advises applicants to be prepared to explain unusual or large deposits appearing in their financial records.
6. Upload the required documents
Supporting documents must be uploaded as part of the application.
Applicants are advised to ensure that documents are complete, valid and consistent with the information provided on the application because missing or incorrect documents could delay processing.
7. Check everything before submission
UKVI has warned applicants to pay particular attention to personal information before submitting.
According to the guidance, incorrect names and personal details are among the most common application errors. If a mistake is discovered after payment and submission, the applicant may have to withdraw the application and begin the process again.
8. Pay the required fees
Applicants must pay the Student visa application fee. Those staying in the UK for more than six months will generally also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge.
The current UK government guidance lists the Student visa application fee for applications made from inside or outside the UK at £558, although applicants should check the official GOV.UK page for the latest applicable charges before paying.
9. Complete biometric requirements
Applicants must prove their identity as part of the process. Depending on their circumstances, they may be instructed to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph.
10. Wait for the decision
Once the application has been submitted, applicants should wait for UKVI’s decision rather than repeatedly contacting the authorities.
For applications made outside the UK, the official guidance currently says applicants will usually receive a decision within three weeks. Applications made inside the UK usually take about eight weeks. Complex applications can take longer.
Applicants will receive notification when a decision has been made and should check their email, including spam or junk folders.
11. Do not travel before the visa starts
Students applying from outside the UK must not travel to Britain before the start date stated on their visa.
Successful applicants will receive an eVisa, which provides a digital record of their immigration status. They will need to establish access to their UKVI account and ensure that their travel document is properly linked.
