Nnamdi Kanu Appeals to CJN, Court of Appeal President for Urgent Hearing of Cases

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the President of the Court of Appeal, seeking urgent attention to cases connected to his legal battle.

Kanu’s family disclosed the development on Tuesday, saying the IPOB leader wants the relevant appellate proceedings to be heard without further delay. The request comes as he continues to challenge his conviction and multiple sentences handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to reports, Kanu’s appeal is focused on several legal issues arising from his trial and conviction. He has maintained that the proceedings violated his rights and has asked the appellate court to review the decisions of the lower court.

The renewed request for an urgent hearing is significant because Kanu’s case has remained one of the most closely watched legal and political matters in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East.

In February 2026, Kanu filed a notice of appeal challenging his conviction. Among other arguments, he contended that the trial court proceeded to judgment while a bail application was pending and that he was denied an adequate opportunity to present his final written address.

Kanu also challenged the legal basis of his conviction, arguing that he was convicted under legislation he claimed had been repealed. He consequently asked the Court of Appeal to overturn the conviction and sentences and discharge and acquit him.

The latest correspondence to the heads of Nigeria’s judiciary places renewed attention on the pace of the appellate process and the importance of timely judicial determination in high-profile cases.

Kanu’s legal battle has generated considerable public interest, with supporters and various groups in the South-East repeatedly calling for his release and a resolution of the case.

The Federal Government, however, has maintained its position in the prosecution, while the courts continue to determine the legal issues arising from the case.

As the appellate process progresses, Kanu’s request for an expedited hearing is expected to keep his case firmly in the national spotlight, particularly amid continuing discussions about justice, due process and the broader political implications of his detention.
