Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has responded to criticism over his involvement in the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, denying allegations that he financially influenced voters to secure victory for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Davido reacted on Monday after an X user highlighted his role in the governor’s re-election campaign, particularly his influence among young voters, entertainers and social media users. The user described the singer as an important figure who helped give Adeleke’s campaign a youthful and culturally relevant appeal.
Responding to the post, Davido rejected the suggestion that he bought support during the election.
“I brought no one. No one defended me. I backed my family on my own. I have done my job,” the singer said.
He also expressed frustration with the country’s political environment, adding, “Nigerian politics is evil and I don’t want to be a part of it till God helps us.”
The comments are significant because Davido was one of the most visible celebrity figures associated with Adeleke’s campaign. His large social media following and public support for his uncle brought considerable attention to the election, particularly among younger Nigerians.
Adeleke was declared the winner of the election after polling 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes. The result gave Adeleke a margin of 66,252 votes.
The election also generated several political controversies, including disputes between Davido and political figures supporting the APC candidate. The singer publicly criticised some of those involved in the election and called for respect for voters’ decisions.
Davido’s involvement reflects the growing intersection between Nigeria’s entertainment industry and politics, as celebrities increasingly use their platforms to mobilise supporters and comment on elections.
Governor Adeleke’s victory secures another term in office, while Davido’s latest remarks suggest the singer may distance himself from partisan politics despite his continued support for his family.
