Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced his first official leave since the inauguration of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, temporarily stepping away from his routine engagements.
The development is an administrative break for the Vice President, who has maintained a busy schedule since assuming office in May 2023. During his absence, government activities are expected to continue without interruption through the established structures of the Federal Government.
Shettima has played a prominent role in the administration’s policy and diplomatic activities, frequently representing President Tinubu at national and international events. He has also been involved in government initiatives covering economic development, investment, food security, job creation and youth empowerment.
The leave is noteworthy because of the Vice President’s extensive responsibilities within the administration. However, it does not amount to a change in government leadership or a suspension of official activities.
Government ministries, departments and agencies are expected to continue carrying out their statutory responsibilities while the Vice President is away. Matters requiring presidential or executive attention will continue to be handled through the appropriate constitutional and administrative channels.
Shettima became Vice President on May 29, 2023, alongside President Tinubu following their victory in the 2023 presidential election. Before becoming Vice President, he served two terms as Governor of Borno State between 2011 and 2019 and later represented Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Since joining the Tinubu administration, Shettima has frequently been assigned major responsibilities, including representing the President at important events and leading government delegations.
His official leave comes as the Federal Government continues to implement its policy agenda amid economic and security challenges confronting the country. The administration has continued to pursue reforms in areas such as taxation, investment, agriculture and social intervention programmes.
The temporary absence of a senior government official is a normal feature of public administration, provided that appropriate arrangements are in place to maintain continuity.
Shettima is expected to resume his official engagements after the completion of the leave period. His return will see him continue his constitutional responsibilities as Vice President and his role in supporting the President’s administration.
For now, the development is being treated as a routine administrative matter, with no indication that it will affect the day-to-day functioning of the Federal Government.
