Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has renewed his opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, declaring that the campaign against the President’s 2027 re-election will continue without compromise.
Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks while reacting to the composition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
The former lawmaker questioned the decision to appoint Tinubu as chairman of his own presidential campaign council. He described the arrangement as unusual and argued that it raised questions about the structure and internal confidence of the ruling party.
Melaye also criticised the inclusion of Nigeria Revenue Service chairman Zacch Adedeji in the campaign council as Deputy Director of Fundraising. According to him, the position could create a conflict of interest because Adedeji currently heads a government agency responsible for revenue collection.
The ADC chieftain said he intends to challenge the appointment in court, arguing that the role of a serving public official in a partisan campaign structure should be examined against relevant public service regulations.
Beyond the legal challenge, Melaye questioned the size and composition of the APC campaign council, describing it as excessively large and alleging that some responsibilities appeared duplicated.
He said the opposition would not be discouraged by the ruling party’s preparations for the next presidential election.
“The battle to stop Tinubu is a battle of no retreat, no surrender,” Melaye declared.
The comments underline the increasingly competitive political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition parties and politicians stepping up their criticism of the Tinubu administration and its re-election plans.
The APC recently unveiled its campaign council, naming Tinubu as chairman, Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda as vice chairmen, while former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari was appointed Director-General.
As political parties prepare for the 2027 contest, Melaye’s latest remarks signal that the opposition intends to scrutinise the ruling party’s campaign structure while pursuing both political and legal avenues in its challenge to Tinubu’s re-election bid.
