The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the composition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign council, questioning the inclusion of individuals who have previously faced corruption-related investigations or allegations.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party described the campaign structure as a “rehabilitation centre” for people carrying unresolved questions of corruption and public accountability.
The ADC specifically cited former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, and former Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Ngozi Olejeme. Edu was suspended in 2024 following controversy surrounding an alleged request to transfer N585 million to a private account, while Olejeme has faced an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) case over alleged financial offences.
The opposition party called on the government to clarify the status of the cases involving the two former officials and others listed in the campaign council.
“If they have been cleared, the government should show how and when and by whom they were cleared,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC further alleged that some financial crime investigations involving politically connected individuals had lost momentum, with those involved later returning to public or political prominence. However, the party’s claims do not establish criminal guilt against the individuals mentioned, and the status of each case would need to be determined by the relevant authorities or courts.
The controversy comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election. The APC campaign council includes Tinubu as chairman, Vice President Kashim Shettima as vice-chairman and former Zamfara Governor Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General, alongside several senior party figures.
The ADC said the next election should focus on the Tinubu administration’s record, particularly issues surrounding economic hardship, living costs and governance.
The dispute adds to the growing political scrutiny surrounding Tinubu’s re-election campaign. As the 2027 contest approaches, the composition and credibility of campaign teams are likely to remain central issues for both the ruling party and opposition groups.
