Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged Nigerians to take a closer look at the track records, policy proposals and capacity of presidential candidates before deciding who to support in the 2027 election.
Makinde, who is positioning himself as a presidential contender, said voters should move beyond political rhetoric and examine what each candidate has achieved and intends to accomplish if elected. His comments come as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the next general election.
According to the governor, the 2027 contest should be centred on practical solutions to Nigeria’s major challenges rather than personalities, slogans or sentiments. He said his own campaign would focus on what he described as putting Nigerians first and presenting workable policies.
Makinde has outlined a proposed “Reset Agenda”, which he said would address key areas including security, the economy, food production and the rising cost of living. He also indicated that the campaign would involve consultations with Nigerians across different regions to better understand their concerns.
The governor’s position is significant as political parties and aspirants increasingly begin to define their messages ahead of the presidential contest. With several political figures expected to seek the presidency, voters are likely to face competing claims about economic management, security, infrastructure and social welfare.
Makinde urged Nigerians to scrutinise the records of all candidates rather than making electoral decisions solely on the basis of political affiliations or campaign promises.
The call also places emphasis on accountability, as voters will have the opportunity to compare the performance of current and former public officials seeking higher office.
Makinde has served as Oyo State governor since 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. His emergence as a potential presidential contender adds another dimension to the opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
As political preparations continue, the debate is expected to increasingly focus on the records and policy platforms of presidential aspirants, with voters ultimately determining which candidates can secure their support at the polls.
